The Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program (HRLMP) is one of the largest integrated laboratory service programs in Canada providing laboratory support and clinical testing for clinical trials and research studies in the Hamilton area. These laboratories are jointly operated by Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. Between the two hospitals, there are a total of 31 labs with approximately 625 lab staff and physicians. In 2023, HRLMP labs conducted 7.7 million tests, supported 182,000 emergency department visits, and supported over 1,600 cardiac surgeries. Together, SJHH and HHS are seeking a Chief, Laboratory Medicine, Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Josephs’s Healthcare Hamilton and, and Medical Director, Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program make a difference. This position offers the opportunity to lead transformative change in laboratory medicine, championing new standards in clinical and academic excellence.
The Position
As Chief, Laboratory Medicine, Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Josephs’s Healthcare Hamilton and, and Medical Director, Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program, you will lead one of the largest laboratory programs in the province, championing excellence in patient care, education, and research with a direct impact on shaping the future of laboratory medicine across the region. This strategic and operational leadership role involves enhancing integrated laboratory service delivery at both SJHH and HHS and, in collaboration with McMaster University, optimizing the lab’s academic partnerships and profile. In addition to providing services to internal clients, the HRLMP serves over 150 external clients through the Laboratory Reference Centre (LRC). As Chief, you will focus on fostering innovation, research, and development to enhance the LRC’s competitive edge and ensure sustainable growth and elevate the LRC’s position as a leader in reference testing services.
You will oversee the integrated laboratory services across multiple sites, enhancing the synergy between various laboratory sub-specialties including clinical chemistry, immunology, anatomical pathology, genetics, hematology, microbiology, and transfusion medicine. You will be responsible for ensuring high standards of care are met consistently, improving patient outcomes through innovative practices, and advancing laboratory medicine quality. Your role will include championing the development and implementation of strategic initiatives aimed at addressing key challenges such as the integration of advanced technologies, reducing wait times, and improving care coordination.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader in laboratory medicine with a proven track record of leading operations, inspiring system-level change, and empowering teams while fostering academic excellence and leading innovations in practice. You are a physician licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario or eligible for licensure as recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or other certification that is deemed to be equivalent. You have an academic appointment at McMaster University or should be eligible for one.
